What to Expect

PremiereLens read

Psyren opens as a disappearance mystery before it becomes anything else. A red phone card, a missing childhood friend, a pattern that keeps widening: the early episodes build dread through investigation rather than combat, and the supernatural elements surface gradually rather than all at once. When the action does arrive, it carries the weight of everything that came before it.

Supernatural abilities develop across an ensemble rather than centering on a single protagonist's growth, and the alternate-reality structure gives the fight sequences a conceptual dimension that pure shonen action rarely has. Arcs run long, consequences accumulate, and the conspiracy does not resolve cleanly or quickly. That slow expansion of scope is the show's defining rhythm.

Why this pick

Psyren’s appeal grows from supernatural abilities colliding with danger, a quality A Certain Item of Dark Side brings to its covert missions and psychic fights. Both keep character loyalty under strain as the action escalates, though Psyren builds from a disappearance mystery, while Dark Side moves faster through deadly assignments and a new member’s friction with the team.
