What to Expect

PremiereLens read

School Spirits runs a whodunit and a ghost story through the same plot: Maddie is both the detective and the missing person, which keeps the mystery unusually personal. Every clue she uncovers about her own disappearance carries a double weight, because solving the case means confronting what happened to her.

The high school setting doubles as purgatory, so the social world of classmates and friendships does not disappear when Maddie does. She navigates those relationships from the other side, which gives the supernatural premise a grounded, specific texture. Quieter scenes about loss and identity sit alongside the procedural momentum, and the two registers push against each other in ways that keep the story from settling into formula.

MysteryDrama

Follows five friends in high school who receive a death warning from a mysterious wish-granting app. As they struggle to escape their fates, they uncover chilling truths that connect the app to the sudden death of a classmate.

Why this pick

If Wishes Could Kill brings School Spirits fans a similarly tight teen mystery where the stakes hit close to home and time keeps running out. A death-warning app turns everyday friend-group secrets into urgent cases, with betrayal and guilt driving the pacing faster than the supernatural mood.

The story takes place in a world of modern, civilized, anthropomorphic animals with a cultural divide between the carnivores and herbivores. The series takes its name from the in-universe rank of Beastar, an individual of great talent, service, and notoriety. Legoshi, a large gray wolf, is a timid and quiet student of Cherryton Academy where he lives in a dorm with several other carnivorous students including his outgoing Labrador friend, Jack. As a member of the school's drama club, Legoshi works as a stagehand and supports the actors of the club headed by the star pupil Louis, a red deer. Out of nowhere, Tem the alpaca is brutally murdered and devoured in the night setting a wave of unease and distrust between the herbivore and carnivore students. At the same time, Legoshi has a fateful encounter with Haru, a small dwarf rabbit, and begins developing complex feelings for her.

Why this pick

Beastars shares School Spirits’ high-school setting where secrets spread through friendships, and every conversation carries pressure. A murder mystery unfolds with restrained, uncomfortable romance and slow-burn tension, trading School Spirits’ ghostly warmth for darker, more intimate unease.
