What to Expect

PremiereLens read

The 'Burbs turns lawn-chair small talk and awkward encounters into a darkly funny neighborhood mystery. Friendly faces offer little reassurance when suspicion spreads across the cul-de-sac, and the comedy feeds on paranoia about people living just a few doors away. There are real jolts amid the deception, but the mood stays funny and unnerving rather than outright frightening.

Flashbacks to the husband's past gradually complicate the present-day puzzle. Spouses, siblings, parents and an ex all have something to hide, extending the distrust beyond unfamiliar neighbors into family relationships. This is one continuing mystery, with betrayals and a revenge streak pushing the story toward a twist ending rather than a series of separate cases.

Why this pick

The 'Burbs makes everyday suburban awkwardness funny while letting suspicion creep in, a combination The Chair Company takes into the workplace.
