What to Expect

PremiereLens read

Mating Season treats the search for love with frank, raunchy humor rather than woodland sweetness. Flirting, sex and romantic disappointment supply the comedy, with awkward pursuits and mismatched pairings giving the animal-world setting a decidedly unromantic edge. The mood is more messy and gossipy than tender, even when the desire for a partner is sincere.

Bears, raccoons, deer and foxes give the ensemble a range of love lives to follow rather than a single romance. Their relationship dilemmas put hopeful attraction alongside the embarrassment of getting it wrong. That breadth leaves room for both romantic optimism and the less flattering business of trying to get together.
