Lord of the Flies builds its suspense through a gradual breakdown of cooperation. Rules lose their grip, efforts to govern responsibly become sources of division, and power struggles turn the boys against one another. The pacing is deliberate, following the small fractures in group life until disagreement gives way to violence. Danger grows from within the group rather than arriving as an outside threat.
The tropical island offers no adult authority to contain those conflicts. Survival requires the boys to work together, yet their competing factions make that cooperation increasingly fragile. The drama keeps that contradiction painfully concrete: the people they depend on can also become the people they fear. As their shared order collapses, the story turns bleak rather than offering a reassuring release.
