Grantchester(2014)

Set in 1953 Grantchester, a village just outside Cambridge, the series follows a country vicar who keeps stumbling into murder. Sidney Chambers brings something most detectives lack: people confess things to a clergyman they would never say to the police, and that pastoral trust turns out to be a surprisingly sharp investigative tool. The crimes are period-specific and grounded, the pacing unhurried, and the moral questions that surface alongside each case feel genuinely earned rather than decorative.

Running parallel to the investigations is Sidney's complicated feelings for Amanda, a woman whose social world sits well above the reach of a village vicar. That gap, class as much as circumstance, gives the series a slow-burn romantic friction that the crime plots alone could not supply. His partnership with Detective Inspector Geordie Keating adds another kind of tension: a world-weary professional and an amateur whose instincts he cannot quite dismiss, circling each case from different angles.
