A bridegroom found dead days before his wedding sets off a slow, methodical investigation that keeps widening its circle of secrets. The case itself is layered, each person connected to the dead man carrying something they would rather not have examined, and the procedural work of uncovering those layers is given real time and weight rather than rushed toward resolution.

The two officers working the case are themselves in various states of fracture, and their private troubles do not stay neatly separated from the job. Domestic pressure and professional strain accumulate together, so the investigation and the investigators erode at roughly the same pace.
