What to Expect

PremiereLens read

Euphoria runs multiple coming-of-age stories at once, shifting focus across an ensemble of high schoolers whose lives keep colliding. Addiction, sexual insecurity, jealousy, and betrayal all get treated with the same unsentimental candor, and no arc wraps up cleanly. The series earns its intensity by refusing easy resolution.

Flashbacks do real structural work here, surfacing earlier moments that quietly reframe what a character is doing in the present. Rue's relationship with Jules carries the most emotional weight, but the show keeps cutting away to Nate's concealed insecurities or Cassie's ongoing fallout from her past, so the pressure is always redistributing. That restless movement between characters is what keeps the drama from settling into a single register.

Official Premise

An American adaptation of the Israeli show of the same name, "Euphoria" follows the troubled life of 17-year-old Rue, a drug addict fresh from rehab with no plans to stay clean. Circling in Rue's orbit are Jules, a transgender girl searching for where she belongs; Nate, a jock whose anger issues mask sexual insecurities; Chris, a football star who finds the adjustment from high school to college harder than expected; Cassie, whose sexual history continues to dog her; and Kat, a body-conscious teen exploring her sexuality. As the classmates struggle to make sense of their futures, the series tackles the teenage landscape of substance-enhanced parties and anxiety-ridden day-to-day life with empathy and candor.

Drama

On Chicago's south side, an average day finds kids prepping for school as their parents head off to work, young adults trying to make a living, and the elders keeping an eye on things from their front porches. But in this tough neighborhood, real dangers threaten daily to squelch dreams, and the simplest decisions can have life or death consequences. From Emmy® winner Lena Waithe, The Chi is a timely coming-of-age drama series centered on a group of residents who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption.

Why this pick

The Chi shares Euphoria’s focus on close friendships under pressure, where everyday choices can turn into sudden, irreversible consequences. You get the same mix of warmth and danger in a working-class neighborhood, with characters juggling ambition, loyalty, and family fallout, but the pacing is more communal and grounded than the flashback-heavy, addiction-driven intensity.

DramaCrime

Amsterdam Empire is an extravagant crime drama full of glamour and grime at the heart of the Amsterdam cannabis scene.

Why this pick

Amsterdam Empire brings Euphoria’s obsession with betrayal and messy relationships into a sharper urban crime world. Infidelity, revenge, and fractured family ties create constant friction in scenes full of workplace tension and personal grudges, with danger rising from who can’t be trusted, but it moves faster and feels larger-scale than Euphoria’s intimate teen chaos.
