Death in Paradise builds each hour-long case around a tight circle of suspects and a clever murder puzzle, ending with a gathering where the killer is unmasked. The mysteries are self-contained, with a clear answer by the close of each episode. Violence stays mostly offscreen, keeping the crime-solving cozy and easygoing rather than grim.
Saint Marie’s beaches, jungle and sleepy seaside towns give the investigations a bright, relaxed backdrop. Inside the small police station, co-worker banter adds gentle humor, while the British detective’s awkwardness and sharp eye make an effective pairing: being out of place supplies the comedy, but noticing the right detail helps solve the case.

DI Jimmy Perez and his team investigate crimes in the Shetland Islands.
The pleasure of a clever murder puzzle and a close-knit island community carries from Death in Paradise to Shetland, though the mood turns much darker. Its detectives follow secrets through harbours and tiny villages where suspects are also neighbours, while the windswept scenery and dry humour replace Saint Marie’s sunny ease.
Having left Saint Marie to be with Martha, DI Humphrey Goodman starts a new life with her in Devon, bringing his unique brand of chaotic genius to the small, close-knit community.
Death in Paradise’s tidy weekly puzzles, gentle jokes, and awkward detective charm continue in Beyond Paradise, with a cozier village feel. Quirky locals and a close-knit police team keep each case light, while the lead’s romance and family life add warmth beyond the mystery.
Tatort is a long-running German/Austrian/Swiss crime television series set in various parts of these countries.
Death in Paradise’s satisfying weekly whodunits and lively detective teams find a more grounded, talky counterpart in Tatort. Each episode brings a new case and local cast, with co-workers’ dry banter and small clues gradually narrowing the suspects, while the mood can turn sober rather than sunny.
