Beyond Paradise(2023)

Beyond Paradise pairs contained crime puzzles with a detective who can read a case better than he can navigate a social encounter. Humphrey Goodman’s awkwardness supplies the comedy, but his investigative insight gives the mysteries their forward motion. The Devon setting keeps each case close to community life, with personal connections crossing into police work and a gentle tone that leaves room for both disorder and discovery.

Humphrey and Martha’s relationship has its own difficulties, separate from the question of who committed a crime. Romantic tension and mother-daughter friction carry through alongside the weekly investigations, giving the characters problems that cannot be neatly solved with a deduction. That contrast allows the series to move between tidy mystery resolutions and the less orderly business of getting along with people.
