What to Expect

PremiereLens read

Ghost cases, detective legwork and demon fights share the screen in Agent from Above, with temple folk beliefs woven into a modern Taiwanese city. Eerie encounters give way to brisk, martial-arts-style action, while lighter banter breaks up the dread. Individual supernatural disturbances feed into a season-long threat to the balance between the human and demon realms, rather than staying neatly contained.

Han Chieh’s service is a punishment for a childhood mistake, giving his work a personal cost beyond the danger of each confrontation. Yeh Tzu’s optimism and Chang Min’s ability to see spirits bring companionship to that burden, with a found-family bond developing among the three. As Han Chieh uncovers the larger threat, he also begins to reconsider his gift as something more than an obligation.

Action & AdventureComedy

Chiang Fu-sheng is a down-on-his-luck gangster buried in debt and mired in a midlife crisis. By chance, he becomes entangled in a violent conflict sparked by a mysterious organization known as the Fixers. Operating in the shadows among ordinary citizens, the Fixers are based in the century-old Qinghe Temple, where they discreetly handle thorny problems from both the underworld and the establishment tasks political and business elites alike cannot resolve themselves. Qinghe Temple takes Chiang under its wing and pairs him with Hsueh Chiu-nan, an arrogant second-generation political scion whose personality clashes sharply with his own. Their already fraught missions are further tested by Shen Mei-na, a mysterious Fixer who repeatedly challenges them. As tensions rise, Qinghe Temple's long-time rival, Night Moon Hall, allies with other factions to launch a full-scale assault, threatening to dismantle the underground order Qinghe Temple has protected for over a century.

Why this pick

Agent from Above and The Fixers both mix supernatural danger with brisk action and dry banter, keeping tense confrontations lively rather than grim. Where Agent from Above sends its trio after spirits and demons, The Fixers follows two bickering partners through bruising jobs at a temple, with a rival crew threatening an all-out underworld war.

A documentarian's prison interview with a serial killer triggers mysterious dreams and encounters with a dead student's ghost.

Why this pick

The eerie ghost encounters and crime mystery in Agent from Above will feel familiar in Had I Not Seen the Sun, where a filmmaker’s prison interview with a convicted killer leads into unsettling dreams and a dead student’s ghost. It is darker and more brooding, with romance adding moments of tenderness between the chills.
