Taste-matched follow-ups
These picks stay near the sweeping female ambition, wistful period romance, and rural family conflict feel, then widen out into a few deeper cuts. Every pick is a recent premiere or a returning season.
Closest matches first, then broader nearby picks.
Why this fits: My Brilliant Career and A Woman of Substance both center on a determined woman pushing past the life her class and family expect her to accept. One follows a young writer weighing love against independence on a struggling farm; the other follows a servant climbing toward wealth and influence, with a broader, more sweeping saga.
Why this fits: My Brilliant Career and Mystery Road: Origin share a quiet, sun-baked Australian setting where family ties shape a young adult’s choices. The first finds warmth and wistful romance in a daughter’s struggle for independence, while the second turns its outback stillness into slow-building dread around a strained father-son bond.
Why this fits: My Brilliant Career and The Abandons both find strong feeling in rural families trying to hold on to a life of their own. The first is a wistful period drama about a young woman resisting marriage and family expectations; the second is a harsher frontier story, with fierce mother-child bonds and violent clashes over land.
My Brilliant Career’s rural family conflict gives way to Dustfall’s small-town secrets, where a detective’s return home turns personal ties into part of a slow-burn investigation. The focus shifts from a young woman’s fight for independence to survivors seeking justice, with a much darker, more unsettling story about sexual violence.
My Brilliant Career’s coming-of-age story and romantic friction find a livelier counterpart in Heartbreak High’s outsider friendships, crushes, and first heartbreaks. Instead of one young woman pushing against family duty in a period setting, this is a fast-moving ensemble at school, with frank teen comedy and messier social chaos.
My Brilliant Career’s rural family conflict and romantic tension take a darker turn in The Hunting Wives, where dangerous friendships and a murder unsettle small-town life. Rather than a young woman pursuing independence in a wistful period drama, expect brisk, soapy suspense, seduction, and betrayals among adults.
