Starfleet Academy puts its focus squarely on the cadet experience: the training, the competition, the friction of people from very different backgrounds forced into close quarters with shared ambitions. The far-future setting brings alien characters into that mix, and the action sequences give the drama a physical urgency that keeps the interpersonal tension from turning inward for too long.

Early romantic entanglements run alongside sharper rivalries, and the show lets those two currents complicate each other rather than keeping them separate.
