Slow Horses runs its espionage through the grinding machinery of institutional failure. MI5's Slough House is where careers go to die, and the agents stuck there are defined less by their tradecraft than by the bureaucratic humiliations that landed them in disgrace. The comedy is bone-dry and entirely deadpan, never breaking the tension so much as making it stranger and more uncomfortable.
Office hierarchy does as much damage here as any external threat. Personal grudges between colleagues, the specific cruelty of a boss who weaponizes contempt, and the slow accumulation of procedural detail all carry genuine weight. Competence surfaces unexpectedly, and when it does, it feels earned rather than convenient, because the show has spent considerable time establishing exactly how much these people distrust each other and themselves.
