What to Expect

PremiereLens read

Slow Horses runs its espionage through the grinding machinery of institutional failure. MI5's Slough House is where careers go to die, and the agents stuck there are defined less by their tradecraft than by the bureaucratic humiliations that landed them in disgrace. The comedy is bone-dry and entirely deadpan, never breaking the tension so much as making it stranger and more uncomfortable.

Office hierarchy does as much damage here as any external threat. Personal grudges between colleagues, the specific cruelty of a boss who weaponizes contempt, and the slow accumulation of procedural detail all carry genuine weight. Competence surfaces unexpectedly, and when it does, it feels earned rather than convenient, because the show has spent considerable time establishing exactly how much these people distrust each other and themselves.

The Undeclared War

DramaThriller

Set in 2024, in the run up to a British general election, THE UNDECLARED WAR tracks a leading team of analysts buried in the heart of GCHQ (the UK's version of the NSA), secretly working to ward off a cyber-attack on the country's electoral system.

Why this pick

The Undeclared War delivers the same British intelligence grind as Slow Horses, where secrecy and bureaucracy squeeze everyone’s choices. Instead of office chaos, you get analysts under relentless pressure, building dread through restrained scenes and digital sabotage, then closing cleanly as the tension tightens.

The Capture

CrimeDrama

After ex-soldier Shaun Emery's (Turner) conviction for a murder in Afghanistan is overturned due to flawed video evidence, he returns home a free man to his young daughter. But when CCTV footage from a night out in London comes to light, Shaun's life takes a shocking turn and he must soon fight for his freedom once again. With DI Rachel Carey (Grainger) drafted in to investigate Shaun's case, she quickly learns that the truth can sometimes be a matter of perspective. Should she trust Shaun Emery?

Why this pick

The Capture shares Slow Horses’ taste for morally messy espionage, where the real threat is what people can prove and who gets to control the story. Surveillance evidence drives the suspense, with fast pacing and small contradictions that keep flipping your certainty, ending with a sharper, stranger sting than Slow Horses’ deadpan burn.
