What to Expect

PremiereLens read

Rivals gives its power games a bubbly, gossipy edge, mixing sharp verbal sparring with the mess of affairs and shifting loyalties. Britain's independent television business in 1986 provides a workplace where professional ambition and personal grudges are difficult to separate. The drama has a soap-like pull, with secrets and romantic entanglements widening the conflict beyond the men trading blows.

Rutshire makes Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham neighbours as well as opponents, putting their hostility uncomfortably close to home. Families, colleagues and lovers get caught in their battle, while television star Declan O'Hara enters the picture as Baddingham's recruit. That overlap between private relationships and professional alliances gives the comedy its bite: a flirtation or a confidence can become another complication in an already tangled feud.

Series Premise

Into the cut-throat world of Corinium television comes Declan O'Hara, a mega-star of great glamour and integrity with a radiant feckless wife, a son and two teenage daughters. Living rather too closely across the valley is Rupert Campbell-Black, divorced and as dissolute as ever, and now the Tory Minister for Sport. Declan needs only a few days at Corinium to realise that the Managing Director, Lord Baddingham, is a crook who has recruited him merely to help retain the franchise for Corinium. Baddingham has also enticed Cameron Cook, a gorgeous but domineering executive, to produce Declan's programme. Declan and Cameron detest each other, provoking a storm of controversy into which Rupert plunges with his usual abandon. As a rival group emerges to pitch for the franchise, reputations ripen and decline, true love blossoms and burns, marriages are made and shattered, and sex raises its (delicious) head at almost every throw as, in bed and boardroom, the race is on to capture the Cotswold Crown.

Strongest Match

Rivals and The Gentlemen make sharp fun of wealthy people scheming to protect their place, with dry wit cutting through family trouble and dangerous deals. Rutshire’s affairs and barbed social sparring give way to a country estate hiding a criminal business, where an aristocrat must learn to bluff and play dirty.

The Forsytes

5 • Mar 22, 2026

DramaRomance

A wealthy solicitor becomes obsessed with a woman who rejects him despite his riches. After they marry, she remains distant, driving him to extreme lengths to control her in this epic early-20th-century family saga

View show

Why this pick

The Forsytes shares Rivals’ pleasure in wealthy families whose romances and rivalries turn private choices into household gossip. Where Rivals serves up sharp barbs and affairs among neighbours in 1986 Rutshire, The Forsytes brings drawing-room tension, quiet resentments, and cousins torn between family duty and love in the late Victorian era.

Industry

HBO • Jan 11, 2026

Drama

Young bankers and traders make their way in the financial world in the aftermath of the 2008 collapse.

View show

Why this pick

Rivals and Industry make ambition and shifting loyalties entertaining, as colleagues, friends, and lovers turn into rivals under pressure. Rutshire’s wealthy neighbours trade affairs, secrets, and sharp barbs, while young London bankers face promotion fights and friendships used as leverage; Industry is faster and more cutthroat.
