M.I.A. gives its crime thriller a lush Miami surface: neon-lit nightlife, subtropical humidity and glitz, with menace and bloodshed beneath the glamour. Etta’s pursuit of revenge unfolds across one long arc rather than a series of separate crimes. As cartel ambitions grow and internal rivalries turn ugly, her hunger for payback draws her further toward violence.
Lovely and Stanley become Etta’s new allies, forming a scrappy found family whose loyalty comes under pressure from her dangerous pursuit. Those bonds give the revenge story a personal cost beyond taking down an enemy. Etta is also discovering what she is capable of, with each push toward retaliation testing the person she might become.
